A roof rarely fails all at once. It warns you first — if you know what to look for. Here’s what CK Roofing’s crews find most often across the Houston metro.
Catching roof damage early is the difference between a $400 repair and a $14,000 replacement. Here are the eight signs we tell every Tomball, Houston, and Woodlands homeowner to watch for — and exactly when to pick up the phone.
1. Water stains or drips in the attic or on upstairs ceilings
Leaks are a roof’s loudest signal. Even a faint ring on a bedroom ceiling means water has already soaked through decking and insulation. Grab a flashlight and walk the attic after the next hard rain — if you see wet wood, daylight through gaps, or watermarks on the rafters, call a roofer the same day.

2. Mold, algae, or dark streaks across the shingles
Those black streaks on a Gulf Coast roof are a cyanobacterium called Gloeocapsa magma. On its own it’s cosmetic, but it holds moisture against the shingle surface and shortens roof life by years. Thick green patches of moss are worse — they lift shingle edges and let water underneath. A soft-wash cleaning handles light cases; heavy infestations usually mean the shingles are already compromised.
3. Shingles that are curling, cupping, buckling, or missing
Shingles are supposed to lie flat. When you can see corners lifting, the edges curling up, or whole tabs blown off, the sealant strip has failed. On a 15-year-old roof that’s expected. On a 6-year-old roof it points to a manufacturing defect or a nailing error at installation. Either way: get it inspected before the next wind event takes more of them.
4. Granules collecting in the gutters
Shingles shed their protective granules as they age, and after hail they shed them in bulk. If you clean the gutters and find what looks like coarse black sand, your shingles are losing their UV armor. New roofs normally lose some loose granules in the first six months — anything beyond that is a signal.
5. Flashing or chimney damage
Flashing is the thin metal that seals the joints around chimneys, skylights, vents, and valleys. It’s where most roofs leak first. Look for rust, lifted edges, cracked sealant, or gaps you can slip a credit card into. 6. Visible storm damage — hail dings, impact marks, lifted shingles
After a Texas storm, walk the yard first, not the roof. If you see hail dents in gutters, downspouts, soft metal roof vents, or air-conditioner fins, your shingles took the same hit. Hail bruises on asphalt shingles knock the granules loose and crack the mat underneath — damage you often can’t see from the ground but a trained roofer spots in minutes. 7. Sagging rooflines or soft spots underfoot
If a section of roof dips or feels spongy, water has gotten into the deck and the OSB underneath is rotting. This is past DIY range. Call us the day you notice it — sagging roofs collapse during storms, not between them.
8. A sudden spike in your energy bill
Attic ventilation and insulation live under the roof. When shingles crack, flashing lifts, or ridge vents clog, hot Gulf air floods the attic and your AC runs double. A roof you’ve ignored for a decade can quietly add $60–$120 a month to your electric bill in a Houston summer. Proper roof ventilation fixes it.
When to call a professional right away
Don’t wait if you see any of these:
- Active drips or new ceiling stains after rain
- A visible sag anywhere on the roofline
- Multiple missing shingles after a storm
- Daylight visible through the attic
- A tree limb that fell on or scraped the roof (here’s what to do first)
